A Study of Signs of Temporomandibular Disorders(TMD) in Orthodontically Treated and Nontreated Groups



Abstract
We measured the prevalence and incidence of signs of temporomandibular (TM) disorders in both a group undergoing orthodontic treatment in Chung-Ang University Hospital Department of Dentisty and a control group in this study. A questionaire
pertaining
to the patient's reports of sings and symptoms of TM disorders and clinical examination were administered by a trained dental examiner. Data collection sessions occurred at before treatment(T1) and at 12 month(T2) Data were also collected for the
control group at the same intervals. There were 76 patients (29 boys, 47 girls), mean age 16.3 years. A control group of 30 orthodontically nontreated subjects, mean age 15.3 years was used.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The range of motion for the treated group corresponded well with thoes of the control grouo.
2) Joint sounds for the treated group and the control group were not significantly different.
3)Orthodontic treatment did not pose an increased risk or developing temporomandibular joint sounds.
4) No statistically significant difference could be found in the change in occurrence of joint sounds among patients treated with tooth extraction and nonextraction treatment strategies.
